Hacia una pesca sostenible en el Mar Mediterráneo

RESUMEN: La pesca constituye una fuente clave en la alimentación de la región mediterránea y el medio de subsistencia de numerosas comunidades pesqueras. Como consecuencia de ello, el mar Mediterráneo sigue siendo hoy día uno de los más explotados del mundo y lograr que se practique en él una pesca sostenible se ha erigido como el objetivo prioritario de varios actores. Este capítulo, en primer lugar, identifica algunas de las principales estrategias y medidas que se han adoptado para lograr una pesca sostenible en el Mediterráneo, tanto por parte de la FAO y la Comisión General de Pesca del Mediterráneo (CGPM), como en el marco de la Unión Europea (UE) y, a nivel doméstico, por parte de España. En segundo lugar, muestra cómo, a pesar de esos esfuerzos colectivos, diversas evaluaciones científicas llevadas a cabo señalan, con preocupación, que la situación actual de la pesca en esta región continúa siendo insostenible. Por ello, en tercer lugar, el presente trabajo señala algunos ámbitos prioritarios de actuación y mejora que pueden contribuir a lograr revertir la situación.

ABSTRACT: Fishing is an important source of food in the Mediterranean region and the livelihood of many fishing communities. As a result, the Mediterranean Sea remains one of the most heavily exploited seas in the world today, and achieving sustainable fisheries has emerged as a shared priority objective by different actors. This chapter, first, identifies some of the main strategies and measures that have been adopted to achieve sustainable fisheries in the Mediterranean, both by the FAO and the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), as well as within the framework of the European Union (EU) and, at the domestic level, by Spain. Secondly, it shows how, despite these different efforts, various scientific assessments indicate, with concern, that the current fishing situation in this region continues to be unsustainable. Therefore, thirdly, the present work highlights some priority areas for action and improvement that can contribute to reversing the situation.
